Concept. Vision. Execution.
These three words are the formula for each unique work that is birthed from Joanna Nobell’s studio.
The concept may be a fleeting thought, or a moment of warm sunshine glistening through rain drops on a cloudy day. But it is there nonetheless. The concept then moves to the vision transpiring and giving way to line, shape, subject, color, lighting, texture, and composition.
Joanna then takes this and researches, rendering her studies to multiple sources within her studio and in the field. Once the research is complete, a canvas is prepped.
Great care and preparation is given to each canvas prior to the initial brush stroke. The canvas is initially prepped with several layers of gesso, then the composition is created in graphite, followed by soft layers of earth tone oils, establishing light and dark. Upon this foundation, color and contrast transcend, enriching through multiple layers of fine quality oil pigment. This step extends over a period of timeless days. This process continues until the work is uniquely beautiful, taking on a personality of its own.

Welcome to the spellbinding world of artist, Joanna Nobell. In order to enter into this place, you need to remember back to when you were a child. Remember letting your imagination run wild. Remember exploring new passions with intense fervor. Each one of us have these passions, they come in a multitude of shapes and sizes. When you would imagine, did your mind take you to that secret place where anything was possible?
For Joanna Nobell that thought, that place, was freedom. Freedom that had no fear, freedom that ran with the wind, freedom that was contained within one creature. The horse. She then took that concept and began recreating it with paper and pencil.
Her lifelong love of the horse has been the inspiration of her artwork. Joanna has continued to pursue her passion and has developed it into an exquisite expression of her imagination. She is self-taught and has explored graphite, intaglio printing, pointillism, and oil on canvas. Her illustrious work is known throughout the Northwest. Joanna’s art is strong and speaks for itself with lush, rich colors and subjects that move in time and space.
